By removing excess skin and fat, a thigh lift can give you firmer, more youthful-looking legs, and ultimately, more confidence. There is no better place to have the procedure done than at the Zelken Institute of Aesthetic Medicine. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Zelken has years of experience helping clients realize their ideal shape and weight.
Unlike liposuction, which eliminates fat deposits where your skin has good elasticity, a thigh lift removes both excess fat and sagging skin. The procedure may be a good solution if diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to improve the shape and tone of your thighs.
In cases where skin elasticity is poor, body lift techniques — along with liposuction — may be recommended. We also offer BodyTite, a radiofrequency technology that actually superheats the deeper tissues and causes contraction or shrink-wrapping. In carefully selected patients, liposuction plus BodyTite (scarless thigh lift) may allow you to see a thigh lift result, without the scar. Dr. Zelken and his team will make sure you have the best plan in place in order to achieve your desired outcome.
A thigh lift isn’t right for everyone, but for individuals with loose skin and extra soft tissue in their inner thighs and/or outer thighs the procedure can work really well. It’s important that you’re generally healthy and do not have any medical conditions that would affect healing or increase risks associated with the surgery. Your weight should be relatively stable. Our team will also talk with you to make sure your goals are realistic and that you are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle once you recover from the procedure.
You will have a consultation with Dr. Zelken and his team before undergoing thigh lift surgery. During the consult, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedure. Be sure to let us know if you’re feeling nervous about your anticipated new look or the operation itself. We’re here to make you feel comfortable.
You will be asked questions regarding your health, desires and lifestyle, and it’s essential that you answer honestly. Dr. Zelken asks patients to stop smoking prior to any operation. We’ll explain the risks associated with thigh lift surgery, such as numbness or other changes in skin sensation and unfavorable scarring. If you choose to get a thigh lift, you must sign consent forms ensuring that you fully understand the procedure and any risks or potential complications. We may also ask that you get a lab test or a medical evaluation, take certain medications or adjust your current medications, and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal supplements and other medications that may increase bleeding during surgery.
The choice to have any plastic surgery is highly personal. You will need to weigh the benefits of a thigh lift and decide if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. If you decide the answer is yes, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the procedure.
You’ll be given medications, including either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, for your comfort during thigh lift surgery. Based on the scope of your procedure and your specific needs, Dr. Zelken will recommend the best course for you.
The length and pattern of the incisions will depend on which part of the thigh is being reshaped, how much reshaping is needed and Dr. Zelken’s judgement. In some cases, incisions may be extensive. The advanced techniques employed by Dr. Zelken usually allow incisions to be placed in strategic locations where they can be hidden by most types of clothing and swimsuits.
With one common method for inner thigh lift, incisions extend from the groin and wrap around the back of the thigh. Another technique is to remove excess fat and skin from the groin down to the knee using an incision along the inseam. Some patients may qualify for technique that only requires an incision in the groin area. For an outer thigh lifts, the incisions can stretch from the groin around the hip and across the back.
Regardless of the incision pattern, deep sutures within underlying tissues will be used to help form and support the newly shaped contours. Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips may be used to close the skin incisions. Dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions after the procedure is complete, and small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood that may collect.
Following your thigh lift procedure, Dr. Zelken and his team will give you specific instructions regarding how to care for your surgical site(s), medications to apply or take orally to aid healing, how to care for your drains and specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or with your health in general. We will also schedule a time for you to follow up with Dr. Zelken in order to monitor your progress and go over any questions you may have.
Although good results are expected from your thigh lift surgery, it may not be possible for some patients to attain their desired shape with a single operation. Additional procedures may be necessary in that event.
Most people notice an immediate improvement in shape and firmness of their thighs, but it can take several months for the full results to show. Some visible scars will remain. As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness. However, most of your initial improvement should remain provided you stay active and maintain a stable weight.
